"Mujer Angel" Photograph Soundscape

I came across Graciela Iturbide's photograph, Mujer Ángel, while browsing through photography books in the library one day, searching for inspiration for my upcoming Sound Design class assignment. Upon first glance, the sonic landscape of the image was reverberating off the page, echoing through the room. I began to imagine this magical journey that the woman in the photograph embarks on, while carrying this special radio through the vast, open scenery.

The still above is from a video piece that was projected as a part of a video art installation at Pratt Institute. I worked with my friend Lucy Shalders on this, and we were inspired by home spaces, particularly the set up of living rooms during different time periods and in various parts of the world. As she worked more on the production design and construction of the space, I took on the construction of the sonic landscape, inspired by the sounds often heard inside and outside a home, while drawing in some elements of magical realism to reflect the twinkling imagery that was projected on the screen.

I met Jasper while he was attending a semester at Pratt, during an exchange program from Germany. He wrote the script for "The Wall" in one of his film classes, and knew about my interest in sound, so he asked me to join his crew. It was such a fun experience. Below are some BTS shots from the production at his friend's tiny, quirky apartment.
